I am a historian of modern Europe, focusing mainly on the period from the 1760s to the present. Themes of special interest include nationalism and the nation-state; liberalism and the formation of liberal and democratic movements; religion and confessional politics; time and social rhythms in the industrial and post-industrial age. My current project is a history of epistocratic thought and its impact on politics and states since the Reformation.
